Nike, originally known as Blue Ribbon Sports (BRS), was founded by Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight in January 1964. The company's first retail store was opened in Santa Monica, California, in 1966. The name Nike was chosen in 1971, and the company officially became Nike, Inc. in 1978.
Nike's first major breakthrough came in 1972 when the company signed a sponsorship deal with Romanian tennis player, Ilie Năstase. In the same year, Nike introduced its iconic "swoosh" logo designed by graphic design student Carolyn Davidson. The logo was purchased for $35.
In 1979, Nike introduced its first line of athletic shoes specifically designed for basketball players, called the "Air Force 1". The Air Jordan series was introduced in 1985, which became one of the most successful and iconic line of sneakers in history of sneakers.
Over the years, Nike has collaborated with various athletes, celebrities, and brands, such as Michael Jordan, Serena Williams, Kobe Bryant, Kanye West, and Virgil Abloh. Today, Nike is one of the world's largest suppliers of athletic shoes, apparel, and sports equipment, with revenues exceeding $39 billion USD in 2020.
